Earlier on, I posted that I was trying out the N:Vision CFL bulbs in our kitchen. We just had recessed lighting installed with a dimmer and I was trying out the 40 watt equivalent flood lights. They didn’t dim and they were too stark. I returned them to Home Depot today when I went there to buy a new dishwasher. I’ll have more on the dishwasher later.
But, I decided to give N:Vision another shot. I bought the regular style light bulbs (they’re the kind of funky wrapped tube type), again in the 40 watt equivalent, soft-white version. They actually use 9 watts. This time, I used them in my office and in the bathroom. I put the first one up and compared it against the single 75 watt bulb I have in the office. Notice the difference…

I think it looks great. Their light is close to the warm yellow light that I like about incandescent bulbs. I think having a cover over the light makes a difference. So, I’ve added 4 bulbs around the house and I’ll be going back to Home Depot to get some 15 watt bulbs which are 60 watt equivalents.
So, all told I’ll be removing 8 bulbs, or about 480 watts and replacing them with 76 watts.
Our electric bill is currently $150 per month. I’ll be sure to let you know the changes I see over time. But if the labels on the box are correct, I’ll be saving a couple of hundred dollars a year with this change. Add that these bulbs have a 7 year warranty so I don’t need to replace them, and I’m very happy.
